What every concrete customer should ask
Questions to help plan a concrete project before signing a contract.
What's the difference between wire mesh and fibermesh reinforcement?
Wire reinforcement is a grid that must be supported in the position required by the design. Fibers are mixed into concrete and serve a different role. Neither option is right for every project; follow the plans and confirm the specified reinforcement with the contractor.
Why does concrete crack, and how do you prevent it?
Concrete changes volume as it dries and responds to temperature and restraint, so cracking can occur. Joint type, layout, and timing help manage where cracks form, but cannot guarantee a crack-free slab. ACI explains joint types and their purposes.
Does the PSI of the concrete mix really matter?
Yes. Concrete strength is one part of a mix specification. The required strength and other mix details depend on project documents, exposure, and intended use. Unplanned water additions can change concrete properties; ask how adjustments are managed.
How important is soil prep before the pour?
The support below a slab and the drainage around it matter. Ask what excavation, base preparation, grading, and compaction are included, and how unexpected soil conditions will be handled.
Why are some quotes so much cheaper than others?
Different totals may reflect different assumptions about demolition, excavation, base work, specifications, reinforcement, finish, access, and cleanup. Compare written scopes and ask each contractor to explain exclusions before choosing.
How does Louisiana weather affect a pour?
Hot, dry, or windy conditions can increase moisture loss during placement and curing. Weather planning and curing practices depend on the mix and site. NRMCA provides general hot-weather guidance; follow project specifications and supplier recommendations.
